Henry J. Cernitz

Henry Cernitz joined Jacobson & Schwartz in 2001, bringing with him 23 years of defense litigation experience. 


Henry began his defense career with Eagle Insurance Company in 1978, starting as a staff attorney and going on to become the attorney of record in 1981.  During his time at Eagle, he handled an extensive case load specializing in livery and general liability matters.  In 1984, he accepted the position of Senior Claims Attorney at Avis Rent-A-Car Systems, Inc., in Garden City, New York.  At Avis, he was responsible for all defense matters in the entire New York Metropolitan Area and monitored Avis cases throughout the United States.  Henry was directly involved with the Avis Insurance Department and drafted rental agreement provisions and legislation for the company.  In 1995 he joined a leading defense firm on Long Island, handling not only automobile liability cases but general liability and premises liability litigation as well.  Henry is also an accomplished appellate attorney, having briefed and argued more than 100 appeals in the Courts of  New York State, including its highest court, The Court of Appeals. 


Henry received his Bachelor's Degree from American University in 1972 and a Juris Doctor Degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1975.  He is admitted to practice in all Federal Courts in New York as well as the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. 


Henry is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Nassau Lawyer's Association of Long Island.


Henry is married  and has two children and three grandchildren.
